Defensible Space Requirements for Rocklin Foothill Homeowners
California law requires 100 feet of defensible space around homes in high-risk fire areas. Here's exactly what that means for Rocklin and Sacramento foothill homeowners.
If your home is in a State Responsibility Area (SRA) — which includes most of the Sacramento foothills east of Rocklin and Roseville — California law requires you to maintain 100 feet of defensible space around all structures. It's not optional, and inspectors do check. Fines can reach several hundred dollars for non-compliance.
Defensible space is divided into two zones. Zone 1 is the 0–30 feet immediately surrounding your home. This is the critical zone. Requirements here are more intensive: clear all dead vegetation, keep grass cut short, remove plants within 10 feet of structures, trim trees so the lowest branches are 6–10 feet from the ground, and create separation between shrubs so fire can't spread continuously. Zone 2 is from 30–100 feet. Requirements here are less intensive but still significant: reduce overall vegetation density, clear dead material, and maintain spacing between plants and trees.
The goal of defensible space is two-fold. First, it slows or stops a fire's spread toward your home, giving firefighters a chance to defend it. Second, it reduces ember deposition — during a wildfire, embers travel miles and land on and around homes. A clean, clear Zone 1 means there's less fuel for those embers to ignite.
For properties with mature trees, defensible space doesn't necessarily mean clearing every tree. It means creating 'vertical separation' between ground-level fuels and tree canopies (ladder fuel removal), and 'horizontal separation' between individual tree canopies (so fire can't leap from tree to tree). A well-maintained wooded lot can meet defensible space requirements and still have a beautiful landscape.
